Malone fire victim remains in serious condition after blaze that killed his mom

MALONE - The 19-year-old Malone man injured in a fatal house fire Tuesday was listed in serious condition Wednesday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

Jared Smith was injured when his home at 20 South St. caught on fire in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

His mother, Pamela Taylor, 45, did not escape. Her body was discovered in her second-floor bedroom once the fire was extinguished.

The autopsy on Wednesday afternoon concluded Ms. Taylor died from smoke inhalation. The Malone Village Police case looking into the fire will remain open until Mr. Smith can be interviewed, Chief Chris Premo said. But there “appears to be no foul play.”

Ms. Taylor’s boyfriend, Vernon Rivers, 39, also escaped the building. He was treated at the Alice Hyde Medical Center for smoke inhalation and burns to his hands and legs.

His sister, Linda Rivers, confirmed via email yesterday that Mr. Smith sustained severe burns to his face, hands and lungs, the latter from smoke inhalation. In spite of his injuries, he could be released from the hospital some time next week, she said.

Mr. Smith was airlifted to Fletcher Allen soon after his arrival at Alice Hyde on Tuesday.

Ms. Rivers also confirmed that Mr. Rivers and Ms. Taylor had been in the process of buying the South Street home together.

“It is a very sad day,” she said.

Fire investigators opened South Street around 6 p.m. Wednesday, but the cause of the deadly blaze had not been released late Wednesday. Fire in the home rekindled a little after 3 a.m. Wednesday, and the Malone CallFiremen were dispatched to the scene.
