Two Ogdensburg men arrested on drug, gun charges

Ogdensburg police say an anonymous tip led to the alleged discovery of drugs and an illegal handgun in a Cherry Street home Friday. Two men are facing charges.

The city police Criminal Investigation Unit charged Michael D. Wells, 28, of 112 Cherry St., Friday with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. City police executed a search warrant at his home, and allege Mr. Wells had in his possession a quantity of Nucynta, a Schedule 2 controlled substance used for pain treatment. He was also charged with criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument for allegedly possessing “numerous” hypodermic needles. Both charges are class A misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in Ogdensburg City Court on Saturday morning and released on his own recognizance on those charges. Mr. Wells is currently on parole, however, and police said because the charges resulted in an alleged parole violation he was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, without bail.

Scott G. Wells, 26, same address, was not at home at the time of the search warrant, but was later located and arrested. Police said he was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly possessing a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun without a permit. Mr. Wells was also arraigned by city court Saturday morning and released to probation supervision.

City police were assisted by the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force, which includes officers from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Gouverneur Police Department.

They were also assisted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
