H-D Girls clinches NAC West title

DEKALB JUNCTION - Hermon-DeKalb wrapped up the NAC West League title at 11-0 on Tuesday downing a Hammond squad coming off a break-through win over Heuvelton, 55-33.

The Demons can clinch a perfect NAC West season in traveling to Heuvelton Thursday which bested Brushton-Moira of the NAC East Tuesday.

“This was a very big win for us in terms of clinching the regular season. We played a good defensive game in the second, third and fourth quarters and we stayed in front of their shooters. It’s going to take another effort like this on Thursday at Heuvelton,” said H-D Coach Steve Morrill after his team climbed to 14-1.

“They are a great team with depth and size. We have to be concerned about their shooters at all times.”

The Demons fell behind 6-5 in the first quarter to Hammond (11-6, 8-3 NAC West) but rallied behind the outside shooting of Hunter Hitchman. H-D gained 18-6 edge in the second quarter and expanded their lead to 40-27 after three.

“Hunter hit some big threes and Delaney Kerr came through with a nice game inside. And Kasey O’Donnell did a lot of things nice tonight,” Morrill said.

Hitchman, who was thinking of her AAU teammate Mackenzie Curran and cancer patient of Kingston, Ont., dedicated the game to her during Coaches Vs. Cancer month in scoring a game high 18 points with two assists, three blocked shiots and two steals. Curran recently had a bone marrow transplant and met Hitchman at the SUNY Oneonta basketball camp.

Courtney Harrington tallied 12 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals for H-D and Kerr added 10 points. Kasey O’Donnell tallied seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Morgan Stottt (8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists, 2 steals) added three points while Bridget Rust (4 rebounds) chipped in two points.

Mikayla Horton tallied 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Hammond. Courtney Bova chipped in nine points while Cassi Whalen added eight points. Taylor Bowman and Paige Frisina netted two and Ally Crosby added one.

Heuvelton 73, B-M 45: Olivia St. Pierre tallied a game-high 23 points and Paige McCormick contributed 16 points for the 14-2 winners followed by Logan Tallman with 15 and Madelyn St. Pierre with eight points. Arielle Gary had 10 points for B-M (9-5).
