QubicaAMF silo fire attributed to dust-collection system (VIDEO)

LOWVILLE — As firefighters approached their fifth hour extinguishing flames at QubicaAMF, 7412 Utica Blvd., on Wednesday evening, they expected several more hours on the scene flushing silos after a dust-collection system in the plant ignited collection bins.

The Lowville Volunteer Fire Department was called about 3:30 p.m. for reports of the fire, which quickly spread to three different locations.

The flushing of the silos forced fine sawdust into the air, mixing with the blowing snow as the temperature dipped into the single digits.

“The mill is shut down now and will be for the foreseeable future,” Lowville Fire Chief Timothy N. Bush said.

Mr. Bush said the fire was contained to the silos and there was no danger from chemicals in the plant.

The facility also had a pair of silo fires in July 2005 and March 2006.

The Lowville plant is the largest manufacturer of wooden bowling pins in the country.
