Potsdam girls reach state hockey tournament title game

CLAYTON - The Potsdam Central girls hockey team held on for a 2-1 win over Section 6 champion Kenmore in the semi-finals of the NYSPHSAA Regional Championship Tournament at the Clayton Arena on Friday night.

The Lady Sandstoners (13-4-3) will now get set to take on Section 3 champion Skaneateles in the title game this afternoon starting at 1 p.m. The Lady Lakers knocked off defending tournament champion Beekmantown of Section 7 by the score of 6-2 in the other semi-final game.

“We played two very solid periods then we ran out of gas a little in the third but the girls really worked hard for this win,” said coach Joe Stark as the Lady Sandstoners generated a pair of second-period goals then held off a late charge by the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless first period, senior Ally Miller broke through for the opening goal just 20 seconds into the middle frame when she took a pass from Kirstin Barkley, skated out from behind the net and lifted a backhander into the top of the goal. Miller made it 2-0 at the 10:17 mark when she tipped a centering pass from Barkley into the back of the net. Kalie Grant also logged an assist on the eventual game-winner.

The Lady Lakers got on the board with 2:37 left in regulation when Hannah Gallivan finished off a play set up by Olivia Smith.

Freshman Sidney Molnar handled 17 of the shots she faced backstopping the win while Lauren Pray kept Kenmore in the game with a stellar 32-save performance.

“Skaneateles played very well against Beekmantown,” noted Stark after his team earned a third straight bid to the tournament final. “We expended a lot of energy to get this win. Hopefully we can get some rest tonight and get ready for tomorrow.”
