Canton Central will use donations to restore golf team

CANTON — Students at Canton Central School will once again have the chance to tee off for golf matches this spring.

The school board on Thursday agreed to reinstate the varsity golf team after learning that sponsors have come forward who are willing to cover the full cost of the program, which was eliminated two years ago during budget cuts.

Athletic Director William A. Porter estimated the cost will range from $3,700 to $5,020, with the bulk of expenses — $3,560 — for the coach’s salary. The team would play about five matches this spring.

The sponsors “would be agreeable to making this happen if the money is accepted,” Mr. Porter said. St. Lawrence University agreed to waive green fees for the golf team.

Business Manager Judy A. Rienbeck said the funds will have to come in the form of a donation rather than listed as a line item in the budget.

The board was approached earlier this year by Daniel Christy, a student interested in participating on the golf team. He was joined at Thursday’s meeting by his parents, Michael and Jorja Christy.

Board of Education members agreed to restore the team on the condition that it’s fully paid for by outside funding.

School board member Victor N. Rycroft warned that the district is facing another budget shortfall and it’s unrealistic to believe everything can be saved by outside funding.

“We have other, more serious issues than kids playing golf,” he said.

Mr. Porter said there are seven other golf teams in Section 10, including neighboring Potsdam, which has a volunteer coach. Massena, Ogdensburg Free Academy, Madrid-Waddington, Gouverneur, Malone and Brushton-Moira also have teams. “The other schools are excited to hear we’re considering this,” he said.

In August, the board agreed to reinstate the junior varsity boys football team after donors stepped forward to cover the $2,252 cost.
