Morristown seeks traffic light at intersection of Route 37 and 58

MORRISTOWN - The village of Morristown has requested that the state Department of Transportation install a traffic light at the intersection of Route 58 and Route 37.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said the request was made after Town Councilor Gary Turner approached the village about the quick moving traffic at that intersection. Mr. Turner could not be reached for comment but has supported the installation of a traffic light since his run for office in 2007.

Mr. Turner again signaled his support for the effort in 2011, noting the amount of traffic at that location and its use by school buses and other types of vehicles.

In its letter, the village did not specify if they are looking for a caution light or a full stop light, Mrs. Shatraw said, giving the department of transportation the ability to come to their own conclusion.

Currently there are stop signs on Route 58 with traffic on Route 37 given the right of way.

Mrs. Shatraw said similar requests made in years past have been denied.

Department of transportation spokesman Michael R. Flick said they have received the letter from Morristown.

“At this point in time I’m not sure how long it will take to get through,” he said, “but we will turn it around as soon as possible.”
