Nature’s Storehouse shows Canton how to make sushi (VIDEO)

CANTON — Dinner was served at Nature’s Storehouse, 21 Main St., from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday as guests participated in a free demonstration on how to make vegetarian sushi.

Two tables were set up with plates of thinly slices vegetables, cheese and pickles along with bowls of brown rice and stacks of sushi nori.

“It’s a toasted nori seaweed and it’s specifically made for sushi,” Nature’s Storehouse owner Rainbow L. Crabtree said.

After spreading rice out on the flat square of toasted seaweed, people were able to pick different types of vegetables including carrots, peppers, avocado and beats to place on one side of the square. Then they had to roll it and slice the roll into pieces.

Mrs. Crabtree said that sometimes when people go out to eat sushi it seems to be a complicated process.

“What we really wanted to get across is that this is a very simple thing,” she said. “We don’t use any special equipment. You can make the rice in a pot and cut the vegetables up and do this at home really simply.”

Mrs. Crabtree said they started the event last year during Winterfest, and the turnout was so good they decided to make it a Winterfest tradition.

“We were looking for something different to do during Winterfest,” she said. “We wanted a family-friendly event that would also raise awareness about healthy eating.”

Mrs. Crabtree said since having the event last year, they have been making sushi in the kitchen at her store and selling it in their deli cooler on Thursdays. “I think that the only places to buy sushi locally would be maybe at the Asian buffets in Canton and Potsdam,” she said.

Katherine Kolber, Morgan McNeal and Sarah Neilson, three students at St. Lawrence University, learned how to make sushi, an experience they plan to try at home as well.

“We saw flyers for this around the school,” Miss Neilson said. “We love sushi and thought it’d be fun to make.”
