CARTHAGE A fire at 31 N. Broad St., West Carthage, which started about 9 a.m. Tuesday and killed several house pets, rekindled and firefighters returned to the scene about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters from Carthage, West Carthage, Castorland, Copenhagen, Great Bend, Champion and Natural Bridge departments were called in. West Carthage fire chief Peter Crump Jr. said extra departments were needed to offer relief to the firefighters due to the frigid conditions. Broad Street from Bridge to Champion streets was closed until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The insured home is now a total loss. Chief Crump also credited the State Department of Transportation and West Carthage Department of Public Works for keeping the fire scene safe by salting and sanding the icy roadways.
