LOUISVILLE — Two Massena-area men have been jailed after being charged with reporting an armed robbery Tuesday night at Steve’s Stop and Shop in an effort to cover up the alleged theft of nearly $1,000 in cash.

State police charged Taylor D. Maxwell, 19, of 16 Meadow Drive, and Kristopher G. Brothers, 20, of 59 Sycamore St., Massena, each with falsely reporting a robbery, petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy, all misdemeanors. Mr. Maxwell was additionally charged with making a false written statement.

Troopers allege that the two men staged a fake robbery at the 14169 Route 37 store where Mr. Maxwell, an employee, took approximately $950 from cash from the register and handed the money to Mr. Brothers, who left the store. Mr. Maxwell than allegedly called 911 and reported he was robbed by a man displaying a handgun.

Both men were arraigned in Louisville Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton.

Bail for Mr. Maxwell was set at $1,500 cash, and Mr. Brothers is being held on $1,000 cash bail.
