High school roundup: Heuvelton wins in overtime; Madrid-Waddington romps

HEUVELTON — Jeff Arquitt led No. 8 Heuvelton with 24 points and the Bulldogs outscored Colton-Pierrepont 5-0 in overtime for a 64-59 victory in a first round game of the Section 10 Class D boys basketball tournament Wednesday.

The No. 8 Bulldogs (10-8) will meet No. 1 St. Regis Falls in a quarterfinal at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Canton.

Riley Pierce added 10 points for Heuvelton. Ethan Knight led the No. 9 Colts (6-13) with 19 points. Zach Farr tossed in 13 and Riley Doyle added 11.

MADRID-WADDINGTON 71, HAMMOND 29

Alex Hammond scored 25 points to lead Madrid-Waddington to victory over No. 10 Hammond in a first-round game in Madrid.

The No. 7 Yellowjackets (9-9) will face No. 2 Morristown in a quarterfinal at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Canton.

Jacob Barney added 12 points and nine rebounds for Madrid-Waddington, and Zach Brock and T.J. Gagnon each scored 11 points.

Zech Cunningham led Hammond (4-15) with 11 points.

HARRISVILLE 53, HERMON-DEKALB 37

Jared Dreythaler tallied 19 points to send No. 6 Harrisville past No. 11 Hermon-DeKalb (3-16) in a Class D first-round game in Harrisville.

The Pirates (12-7) will meet No. 3 Lisbon in a quarterfinal at noon Saturday at SUNY Canton.

Brandon Best scored 11 points for the Pirates, and Cody Merritt led Hermon-DeKalb with 19 points.

EDWARDS-KNoX 77, PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 42

A 28-point game from Kaden Dandrow led the No. 5 Cougars past the No. 12 Panthers in a Class D first-round game in Russell.

Edwards-Knox (13-6) will meet No. 4 Chateaugay in a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Canton.

Abe White added 15 points and Dan Pharoah scored 10 for the Cougars.

Wyatt Snell led the Panthers (2-15) with 16 points.

CHATEAUGAY 62, CLIFTON-FINE 35

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs (12-6) built an early 34-9 lead and cruised by the No. 13 Eagles in a Class D first-round game in Chateaugay.

Seth Young led Chateaugay with 10 points. Chase Koster scored 15 for the Eagles (1-16) and Logan Hayes added 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ST. LAWRENCE 54, NORWOOD-NORFOLk 32

Lindsay Thayer scored 22 points and added 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals, leading top-seeded St. Lawrence past No. 4 Norwood-Norfolk (4-13) in a Section 10 Class C semifinal in Brasher Falls.

St. Lawrence Central (12-6) will face No. 2 Brushton-Moira in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at SUNY Potsdam.

Bailey Gauthier added eight points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and nine steals for the Larries.

BRUSHTON-MOIRA 43, TUPPER LAKE 19

Meagan Martin tallied 13 points to send Brushton-Moira past No. 3 Tupper Lake (4-14) in a Class C semifinal in Brushton. Kirstin Barrett added 10 points for Brushton-Moira (11-6).

POTSDAM 57, GOUVERNEUR 48

Sarah Vivlamore’s 26-point effort led the Sandstoners past the No. 4 Wildcats (5-13) in a Class B first-round game in Gouverneur.

The No. 5 Sandstoners (3-15) will travel to play at No. 1 Canton in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Breanne Sapp scored 20 points for Potsdam. Alisha Way led Gouverneur with 11 points and Haley Easton tossed in 10.

HOCKEY

ST. LAWRENCE 6, ISLANDERS 1

Lukas Arquiett and Kody Kocsis each scored two goals as the Larries (12-6-1, 9-4-1) defeated the Islanders in a Division II game in Brasher Falls.

Nick Kowalchuk and Luke Peets also scored for the Larries. Kyle Delaney scored for the Islanders (5-12-1, 2-11-1).
