COLTON - Colton town officials are speeding up the process of slowing down their drivers in parts of the hamlet, after two new speed devices were ordered and paid for through a grant.

Town Supervisor Dennis B. Bulger told the board this week the devices should be installed this spring, and they were paid for with a $5,000 grant from Complete Streets.

“We got the grant money, and (Highway Superintendent Kevin Hawley) has ordered the new speed devices, so hopefully we’ll get an invoice soon because we have to have that done this month,” Mr. Bulger said.

“Like I said in the past, we’ll be posting one of the permanent ones up by the school and one up in South Colton. Then we’ll have the mobile one that we can move around as needed for the different events in Colton.

“The mobile one is quite effective. I’ve got a lot of good feedback locally, as well as from the mayor of Potsdam. He wants one of those,” he added.

Mr. Bulger added that another phase of the revamped streets will be the addition of some crosswalks.

“The other part of what we’ll do in the spring, we’re going to put in two more crosswalks. We worked with the state, and we put in some crosswalks on Route 56. They got those completed last year,” he said. “It will be good especially for the students. It’s good to be able to get to and from the school and to the library down here safely.”

The town supervisor said that in his experience with the devices he has witnessed their effectiveness. “What these devices do (is) they remind you. It’s a real flashing reminder to check your speeds. That’s why Mayor (Steve) Yurgartis saw that and he called during one of our meetings and said, ‘Gee I kind of like that. Can we go in and buy one together?’ He wanted one for down in Potsdam,” Mr. Bulger said. “They will be shipping in soon. They were ordered about two weeks ago.”
