Ogdensburg police sign three-year labor contract


OGDENSBURG — The City Council and Ogdensburg Police Benevolent Association have signed a three-year contract that will stay in effect until 2016.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said the contract, which applies to the department’s patrol officers, has been under negotiation since the fall.

“It hasn’t been dragged out,” he said of the negotiations.

Benevolent Association President David J. LeBeau could not be reached Friday to comment on the agreement.

At Thursday’s City Council meeting, Mayor William D. Nelson said the association’s 21 members will receive 2-percent pay increases each year under the contract’s terms. Officers also will receive increased incentives to go out and get specialized training.

Mr. Pinkerton said the incentives, which amount to $300 a year per officer, typically will go to younger or newer officers who need it. “It makes us a little more competitive,” he said.

Officers will receive a $100 bonus for staying on with the department in their sixth and seventh years, Mr. Pinkerton said.

However, officers will be paying more out of pocket for health care. Mr. Pinkerton said the officer’s deductible is being increased from $200 to $300 for individuals and $400 to $500 for family plans.

The last contract was negotiated in December 2012 and saw the patrol officers receive 2.75 percent pay hikes.
