Ogdensburg and patrolmen reach three-year contract deal

The Ogdensburg City Council and Ogdensburg Police Benevolent Association have signed a three year contract that will stay in effect until 2016.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said the contract, which applies to the department’s patrolmen, has been under negotiation since the fall of 2013.

“It hasn’t been dragged out,” he said of the negotiations.

Benevolent association President Dave Lebeau could not be reached Friday to comment on the agreement.

At Thursday’s City Council meeting Mayor William D. Nelson said the agreement will see the association’s 21 members receive two-percent pay increases each year.

The contract will also see officers receiving increased incentives to go out and get specialized training.

Mr. Pinkerton said the incentives will typically go to younger or newer officers who need it.

“It makes us a little more competitive with other police departments,” he said of the training incentives.

Mr. Pinkerton said the incentives amount to $300 a year per officer. The contract will also see officers receive a $100 bonus for staying on with the department in their sixth and seventh year, Mr. Pinkerton said.

Coupled with incentives for more training and longevity the contract will see officers paying more out of pocket for health care.

Mr. Pinkerton said the officer’s deductible is being increased from $200 to $300 for individuals and $400 to $500 for family plans. The last contract was negotiated in December of 2012 and saw the patrolmen receive 2.75 percent pay hikes.
