Norwood woman earns first place in balloon coutore competition

NORWOOD - Faye M. Ori of Norwood was awarded first place in balloon couture competition at the Twist and Shout Balloon Convention that was held in Rochester last week.

Since 2000, Twist and Shout has been a constant source for the best in balloon education, friendship, competition and innovation. This annual convention showcases the most talented twisters and continues to set standard for all the other balloon events. This year Twist and Shout hosted over 200 twisters from all over the world including Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United States.

Ms. Ori started making balloon dresses on a whim for bridal shows last year. “I had never seen other balloon dresses except on the internet. I thought it would be a good way to challenge myself. When the opportunity arose to enter a competition winning wasn’t even on my mind.”

But her first competition went better than expected. “I was so surprised when my name was announced for first place. There were designers who had been competing for years. It took a while for it to sink in,” she said.

This was her first time attending Twist and Shout and her first time entering a balloon competition.

The award was given to the designer whose balloon dress scored highest in several categories – Proportion and scale, use of color, originality, details, overall visual appeal and wearability.

Ms. Ori started making balloon animals about 16 years ago when she started clowning as “Cuddles” of Cubby T. Clown & Company. She expanded her balloon skills two years ago when she and her husband, Chris Durand, created IYQ Balloon Décor, an on-site event decorating company.

Additional information and more of Ms. Ori’s balloon creations can be seen on the IYQ Balloon Décor Facebook page. She can also be reached at 315-265-6208.
