Two injured in Saturday afternoon accident

A three-car accident near the Towne Center plaza left a Sackets Harbor man and a Carthage woman with minor injuries.

Police said Judith A. Wells, 67, of 22540 County Route 47, Carthage, was driving west on Route 3 when she attempted to make a left turn onto Towne Center Drive and struck a second vehicle, driven by Thomas G. Rapholz, 76, Sackets Harbor, which was driving east on Route 3.

A third vehicle, in the rightmost lane of Towne Center Drive, subsequently was hit by Mr. Rapholz’s vehicle. Neither the driver, Marlene E. Smith, 51, Gouverneur, nor her passenger, Kiara S. Smith, was injured and the vehicle sustained only minor damage.

Ms. Wells complained of chest pain and Mr. Rapholz complained of head pain after the accident. Both were taken to Samaritan Medical Center for treatment.

According to police, Ms. Wells said she had a green turn arrow to make the left turn. Mr. Rapholz said that he had a solid green light to continue straight. Sheriff’s deputies were unable to determine who had the right of way, and no tickets were issued.
