Hitchman receives Reetz Award

POTSDAM - Hermon-DeKalb senior guard Hunter Hitchman finished her career with 1,695 varsity points at H-D and Clifton-Fine as the sixth highest scorer in the history of Section 10.

But it was the total package of her skills, work ethic, sportsmanship and leadership which further etched her place among the area’s elite on Tuesday as the 2014 recipient of the Jan Reetz Award.

The NNY Girls Basketball Officials Board has presented the award since 1983 when another Green Demon standout in Heidi Aldous was honored. Hitchman became the second H-D player in three years in the tenure of Coach Steve Morrill to receive the prestigious award.

Brianne Sayer, who is now playing or SUNY Canton, was recognized in 2012.

“This award really means a lot to me and I want to thank my coaches, my teammates and my parents,” said the SLU-bound Hitchman who was selected from a group of four finalists which included fellow seniors Rachel Lamica of Malone and Lindsey Thayer of St. Lawrence Central and junior Riley Luckie of OFA. “The other finalists are all great players”.

Hitchman, who is the daughter of Richard and Bridget Hitchman, played four years of varsity basketball and as a senior captain averaged 19.5 points and five steals per game leading H-D to the NAC West Division title at 13-1.

“I knew of Hunter’s great basketball talent as she was the Co-MVP in the West in 2013. But after coaching her I have gotten to know that her soft spoken and genuine personality is what makes her a special person,” said Coach Morrill of the National Honor Society student who earned NAC All-Academic Awards for three years in basketball and track-field.
