CANTON Matthew Peca totaled a school-record six points, including four assists as No. 8 Quinnipiac routed St. Lawrence University, 8-0 on Friday night in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena.
The Bobcats (22-8-5, 12-6-3) scored five power-play goals, including four straight, to dispatch the Saints (12-17-4, 6-11-4) and clinch a first-round playoff bye.
Goalie Michael Garteig made 24 saves to record his sixth shutout of the season, also a school record, for Quinnipiac.
Matt Weninger stopped 15 of 20 shots faced for St. Lawrence, which was without head coach Greg Carvel, who was out with an illness.
With the loss, the Saints drop to 4-10-2 at home this season and have won just once in their past 12 games in Canton.
With one regular-season game remaining, St. Lawrence is tied for ninth place in the conference with Dartmouth and Harvard, and is still in the hunt to host a first-round playoff series.
The Saints, who will host Princeton at 7 tonight, actually sit in 10th place as Dartmouth owns the tiebreaker.
St. Lawrence needs to win tonight and get help from several other teams a Brown loss to Union and a loss or tie by Dartmouth against Colgate in order to secure home ice for the first round of the playoffs.
