Winter Classic a success

To The Editor:

On behalf of the Heuvelton Youth Basketball Association, we would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, coaches, parents, friends and families of our boys fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade basketball teams. Our Feb. 22 Boys Winter Classic tournament was a great success. Thank you to the Heuvelton community for your continued support of our youth: Inn on the Greens, Doug’s Tavern, P&J’s Riverside Deli, Heuvelton Fire Department, Heuvelton Deli, Lake Insurance, Absolutely Everything, Amvets Post 1997 Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of Amvets Post 1997.

We have faithful friends who are always ready to donate and lend an extra hand. Thank you to Renee and Matt Palmer, Jan and Cory Cunningham, Royal and Gloria Martin, Tony and Beth Williams and Colleen and Keith Kelley.

A big thank-you to our surrounding community supporters for your generous donations: St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, UPS Store of Ogdensburg and Plattsburgh, St. Lawrence University Brewers Bookstore, St. Lawrence County Chapter 17 Warthogs, Kinney Drugs, Price Chopper, Save A Lot, Wal-Mart, Pepsi-Cola Ogdensburg Bottlers, Big Cheese Pizza, Pizza Hut, Donut King, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Buster’s Sports Bar, Lowe’s Murray’s Flooring and Little Italy.

To Heuvelton Central School, thank you for hosting our event, and to Eugene Stevens and Tom Stowell, thanks for your assistance throughout the day. To all our volunteer referees — Tony Williams, Charlie McCormick, Austin Weakfall, Rob Powers, Andy Rupert, Jack Palmer, Braydon Couglar and Josh McCallister — your commitment and professionalism is the cornerstone to our event’s success. To the volunteer score keepers — Jack Lake, Michael Pray, Eliza Martin, Hannah Ceresoli, Mason Knauf, Travis Hitsman, and Kelsey Williams — we appreciate you giving your time to support your fellow classmates.

Thank you to all our faithful parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, family and fans who assisted with donations, food, the concession stand, score table, half-court event, raffle table, pizza runs, set-up, cleanup, and the many other duties throughout the day. It takes everyone working together and communicating to host a successful and smoothly run event, and you all nailed it. Your constant positive support of our boys is what keeps them going and improving throughout this skill-building season. We truly appreciate the sportsmanship and positive energy that the stands put out every game.

Thank you to all our visiting teams: Lowville, Edwards-Knox, Gouverneur, Morristown, Canton and Lisbon for traveling to Heuvelton and giving us your competition, best behavior and sportsmanship. You have represented your communities well, and we appreciate the respect you have shown our school, volunteers, players and coaches. Four games makes a full day of basketball, and we hope you had fun.

To all our dedicated players who continue to give their best every game, you continue to persevere through a long, hard learning season. Your fans and coaches can see the improvement in your skills and your teamwork. Your strength, commitment and passion to play basketball keep your fans coming back to see what you will do to surprise us with next. Keep practicing and playing hard.

To our coaches: Brian Martin, Randy Pray, Al Rickett and Art Knauf, our children are learning the game of basketball, the skill of playing hard no matter what the score, playing together and sportsmanship through your tireless support this season. All the parents appreciate everything you do for our boys. Your dedication, patience and care for your players is evident. Thank you for your time and commitment.
