Early morning fire destroys Rodman barn; cause remains undetermined

RODMAN — Flames engulfed a barn early Monday on Kenfield Road in the town of Rodman.

The structure was deemed a “total loss,” but no injuries were reported and the adjacent home only suffered “minor siding damage,” said Jefferson County Fire and Emergency Management Director Joseph D. Plummer.

The 24037 Kenfield Road property, owned by Gregory W. and Emily L. Rudd, was insured.

Firefighters from Rodman, Rutland, Adams, Adams Center, Lorraine and the town of Watertown responded to the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday and battled the blaze in temperatures of 10 below zero until 5 a.m.

While most of the barn’s occupants, including the beef cattle, made it out alive, two or three pigs died in the fire, Mr. Plummer said.

In addition to the subzero temperatures, the lack of fire hydrants in the area posed a challenge to firefighters, and fire trucks had to transport water from several miles away, he said.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined due to the severity of the damage as of Monday afternoon.
