Woolf meets with Democrats in Potsdam

POTSDAM — The Democratic candidate for the 21st Congressional District met with St. Lawrence County Democrats on Tuesday night, but Aaron Woolf gave voters no more information about who he is or how he plans to represent the north country if elected.

Mr. Woolf emerged from the closed-door meeting at Sergi’s Restaurant for approximately two minutes to address a gathering of reporters. He was accompanied by county Democratic Committee Chairman Mark J. Bellardini, who spoke first by announcing, “We feel we have a very good candidate. It was a unanimous endorsement.”

Mr. Woolf, for his part, declined to answer any questions about why he is running, why he is taking so long to formally announce his candidacy, or what he would stand for if elected.

“This is part of my process, going to the different communities,” he said. “We’ll make a formal announcement in the next few weeks.”

Mr. Bellardini also declined to answer questions about the nature of the meeting or Mr. Woolf’s candidacy.

Mr. Woolf is best known as a documentary filmmaker living in both Elizabethtown and Brooklyn. He was a political nonentity until being endorsed by district Democrats last month.

Mr. Woolf has remained out of the public eye since his endorsement was announced, turning down all requests for interviews.

He aims to replace Democratic Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, who will retire at the end of the current term.

Mr. Woolf’s Republican opponent likely will be decided in a June 24 primary. Matthew A. Doheny, Watertown, Joseph M. Gilbert, DeKalb Junction, and Elise M. Stefanik, Willsboro, are all in contention to get their name on the ballot in November.
