ST. REGIS FALLS A Waverly resident was arrested Monday night after she allegedly chained a pit bull outside for so long that the collar became embedded in the dogs neck.
State police charged Shawna A. Bero, 29, with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. The dog belongs to her boyfriend, Mackenzie D. Durant, 30, who has been serving time in the Franklin County jail, Malone, since November, Trooper Jennifer Fleishmann, Troop B public information officer, said.
While the dog, named Mary J., was in Ms. Beros care, she was being fed, but was chained up outside, Ms. Fleishmann said. Ice built up between the links of the collar area of her chain, causing it to tighten and embed itself approximately 5 centimeters into the dogs skin.
On Jan. 1, Ms. Bero noticed that the four-year-old pit bull had a swollen head and was acting ill, Ms. Fleishmann said. She called a family member of Mr. Durants and the dog was brought to the Lake Placid Animal Hospital. A veterinarian reported obvious animal cruelty to the Ray Brook trooper station and the case was moved to the Malone station.
Surgery removed the chain, and the dog is now doing well and staying with a relative of Mr. Durant, police said. Ms. Bero was issued an appearance ticket for Waverly Town Court.
