OGDENSBURG — It’s going to cost a little more to remove the 54 trees on Paterson Street that need to come down before construction on the road can take place after the firm the city initially hired backed out of the contract.

The $10,500 contract with Black River Tree Removal LLC was approved by Ogdensburg City Council on Feb. 24.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said the company backed out of the contract in order to clean up winter storm damage in North Carolina.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, a contract with Richard Sears Tree Experts, Glens Falls, for $12,835 will be considered.

Richard Sears Tree Experts was the second-lowest bidder for the project, Mr. Pinkerton said.

The tree removal needs to be completed by March 31 so that construction won’t harm the nesting habitat of the northern long-eared bat that will be coming back to the city in the summer.

The city is responsible for paying 5 percent of the tree removal costs, Mr. Pinkerton said, with the rest paid by federal aid.

The Paterson Street rehabilitation project is a $7.5 million, federally funded program that will see the road widened by roughly two feet and resurfaced.

Construction will begin in the spring.

When the project is completed, smaller trees will be planted along Paterson Street that won’t interfere with utilities, Mr. Pinkerton said.
