Snow Lover’s Trivia: Smuggler’s Notch, a return destination

Smugglers’ Notch Resort guests bring their families year after year because they love what Smuggs has to offer, everything they are looking for in a perfect family vacation.

Smuggs has award-winning children’s programs. Snow Sport University instructors help children of all ages develop ski and snowboard skills through fun group or private lessons. Custom-crafted, full-day programs engage kids from 6 weeks to 17 years and include lessons, on-and-off slope activities, and lunch. Flaik GPS technology can track and record your child’s day on the slopes, so they can relive their on-mountain experience with you. Smuggs guarantee that each member of your family will have fun, learn to ski or snowboard or will improve their technique regardless of current ability level or Smuggs will refund the cost of that person’s lesson. Adaptive skiing and riding programs for children with special needs are also available.

Sir Henry’s Learning and Fun Park is five acres park on Morse Mountain, which is the site of Night School for Boarding for beginners and Jibbing on selected evenings, and a tube-sliding area. Smugglers’ partnered with Vermont’s Burton Snowboards to develop the next generation of the Burton Riglet Park, an on-snow play area with fun terrain features designed for introducing young children to snowboarding. The park’s focal point is a “treehouse,” an elevated platform with ramps that children can ride down, a balance area inside the treehouse and a lift chair that swings to help kids practice getting on and off the lift.

Smuggs offers a slopeside Resort Village complete with restaurants, lounges, evening entertainment, Top of the Notch snack bar, base lodge with cafeteria, three lunch cafés, pizzeria, après sport activities, two ski rental & repair shops, a snowboard rental and repair shop, two sport shops, a massage center, the FunZone at SmuggsCentral, an indoor swimming pool with hot tub, a full service conference and banquet center, lighted outdoor ice skating rink, U.S. Post Office, a real estate office, a country store, a deli and bakery, child care center, a welcome and reservation center, and two teen centers. Can I say more?

Three interconnected mountains comprise Smuggler’s Notch Ski Area, northern Vermont’s biggest vertical drop at 2,610 ft. Morse Mountain, the beginners’ haven, rises directly out of the Resort Village. Sterling Mountain’s terrain appeals especially to intermediates, while Madonna Mountain is for expert skiers.

Smugglers’ has 78 trails on 300 acres of marked and patrolled acreage. There are an additional 700 acres of unmarked and unpatrolled terrain, a total of 1,000 acres, which is largest in Vermont. The longest run is 3 miles from the Madonna summit to the Village. Popular trails include the Garden Path on Morse, and Chilcoot, FIS, Rumrunner, Treasure and Black Snake on Madonna and Sterling. The Black Hole on Madonna Mountain is the only triple black diamond trail in the East. The trail system is 19% beginner, 56% intermediate, 20% expert, and 5% extreme.

Snowmaking covers 62% of total terrain. Smugglers’ fleet of more than 450 snowmaking guns provide coverage to the bulk of the Resort’s beginner and intermediate terrain, with Mother Nature taking care of the glades and high elevation expert trails where natural features make snowmaking less efficient. Snowfall at Smugglers’ Notch averages 301 inches per season.

Off the slopes, outdoor winter adventure opportunities can be found at Smugglers’ Nordic Adventure Center for cross-country skiing (30 km) and snowshoeing (26 km) and on the ArborTrek year-round canopy tour featuring nine zip lines, a suspension bridge and two rappels.

Smuggs, a great destination for family fun!
