JCC to host Women’s Empowerment Workshops

The Women’s Empowerment and Success Series at Jefferson Community College will bring diverse speakers, activities and educational programs with the American Association of University Women to the campus.

The series will be held March 17 to 20. Events will focus on boosting women’s self-esteem, building confidence, improving health, career development and personal growth.

“The major goal of this is to bring awareness,” said Alyssa F. McKenzie-Chery, the college’s student government office manager. “Conversations can go from there.”

Mrs. McKenzie-Chery said the series will feature a seminar about stress management led by Maria Pascucci, a certified professional life coach, award-winning author and founder of; a vendor fair with representatives from community advocacy groups, health care organizations and chamber of commerce members, a presentation about how to successfully manage time and a screening of the documentary film “Miss Representation.”

Mrs. McKenzie-Chery said when planning the weeklong event, the organizers’ goal was to inspire dynamic empowerment. She said women don’t need to be defined by one role or another. She said the diverse speakers and programs were chosen to display options and management of goals.

At 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Maria Pascucci will present Success Starts with Self-Love in the student lounge in the McVean Student Center. Author of the award-winning book “Campus Calm University,” Ms. Pascucci is a self-proclaimed recovering stress- and anxiety-ridden college perfectionist. With a 3.92 grade point average, Ms. Pascucci graduated summa cum laude from Canisius College. Her presentation will cover topics on external and internal barriers to self-confidence and provide strategies for building confidence.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday in the student lounge, Elizabeth McCormick will share stories about overcoming personal challenges she faced as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in the United States military. Ms. McCormick holds the distinction of being the only female recipient of the 2011 Congressional Veteran Commendation, an award bestowed to a veteran for his or her commitment to duty and community.

During a peacekeeping operation in Kosovo, Ms. McCormick sustained a career-ending injury that forced her to retire from the prestigious rank of chief warrant officer of the United States Army. She is the founder of the John Maxwell Team, a group of certified speakers and sales consultants, and has authored six books. Her most recently published book, The P.I.L.O.T. Method, was released in the fall of 2013.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the vendor fair will take place in the Jules Center Commons.

Mrs. McKenzie-Chery said the vendor fair will pull in local resources for scholarship opportunities.

On Thursday, the college’s student government and the American Association of University Women will co-host a screening of the documentary film “Miss Representation” at 7 p.m. in Sturtz Theater.

In the film, writer, director and producer Jennifer Siebel Newsom delivers a message of media-driven under-representation of women who hold positions of power and influence in America.

Snippets of interviews with Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric and Lisa Ling as well as other politicians, journalists and entertainers will be revealed. A question-and-answer forum will immediately follow the screening.
