Colton Mud Fling to raise money for fire department, recreation programs

COLTON — The volunteer fire department will have until May 10 to turn its firemen’s field into a mud pit obstacle course.

Kevin N. LaMora, chairman of the town’s recreation department, is coordinating the first-ever Colton Mud Fling, a fundraiser that will benefit the fire and recreation departments.

“I really wanted something to bring back the tradition of good, clean fun,” Mr. LaMora said.

But after running 3 miles and trudging through a field of mud, the competitors will be far from “clean.”

The race will begin at 11 a.m. with a 3-mile run on Gulf Road. When runners return to the field at Gulf and Hanson roads, they will enter an obstacle course with logs, tires, mud and soapy tarps to run and slide on.

“We’re going to make a couple of mud holes for them to run through,” said Charles W. Wright, second lieutenant of the fire department.

Mr. Wright said since the fire department is a volunteer operation, it relies heavily on spring and summer fundraisers, including its annual softball tournament and a chicken barbecue.

“I’m hoping this one will be a big success,” he said.

Mr. LaMora said 40 percent of the proceeds will go to the fire department and the rest will go to youth programs for the recreation department.

“It’s a way to kill two birds with one stone,” he said. “People are realizing that with our economic times there are ways to have fun without spending a lot of money on movies or something like that. More people are finding things to do outside, and we’re going to be outside getting muddy and having a good time.”

Mr. LaMora said mud runs are more popular in Franklin County and across the East Coast, but he wants to see how people will respond to an event in Colton.

“Most people just do it to get muddy and have fun while raising money for whatever cause,” he said.

People interested in participating in the competition can register before the week of the event for $25 at any of the town offices, White’s General Store, 4840 Route 56, Boyce’s General Store, 3914 Main St., and Finish Line Lounge, 3927 Route 56.
