The Immaculate Heart Central School student who collapsed during a basketball game March 4 has come out of a coma and is regaining strength, according to his family.

Jack Valentine, 13, has been hospitalized at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, after he suffered a seizure, lost consciousness and had to be resuscitated during a modified seventh-grade basketball game at Indian River Central School, Philadelphia. The youth apparently suffered from aspiration pneumonia, according to junior/senior high school Principal Lisa A. Parsons.

Aspiration pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs and bronchial tubes that occurs when food, saliva, liquids or vomit is breathed into the lungs or airways, according to healthline.com.

According to a blog posting Thursday afternoon on www.caringbridge.com set up to share news of his progress, Jack is working to regain his strength. The blog says he has begun physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Though he is still coming out of sedation, his father, Edward J. Valentine, wrote, “We are pleased that he is speaking and is aware of things and asking questions. Additional tests will come as he recovers from the pneumonia.”

Jack’s mother, Tracey H. Valentine, wrote that the many messages of prayer and encouragement have given the family comfort and strength during the ordeal.
