Cape Vincent nets $50,000 state grant for East End Park facility

CAPE VINCENT— East End Park, situated on the St. Lawrence River in the town, is expected soon to get a locker room facility and open picnic pavilion, made possible in part by a $50,000 grant awarded this month by the state Department of the State.

The $50,000 grant from the State and Municipal Facilities Program was an important piece of funding needed to break ground on the $200,000 project at the public park, a popular venue for scuba divers and swimmers. The project will include a 26-by-70-foot facility with restroom and locker room areas for men and women, Town Supervisor Urban C. Hirschey said. The park, off Broadway near the village-town boundary, also will get an open picnic pavilion that will be large enough for about five picnic tables.

“It’s a very needed addition to the park for people who want to bring bathing suits and swim there and shower afterward,” Mr. Hirschey said.

He said the $50,000 grant will be added to about $100,000 that community organizations have raised so far.

A few community organizations have committed to donating cash and labor for the project. The village will provide $14,000, including in-house labor, while the Cape Vincent Lions Club will donate $2,800. The Cape Vincent Improvement League has committed $1,000, while the Town Council agreed to donate $6,000 in cash and labor.

Planners also have sought grant funding for the project from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Glenn A. Kennedy, a Lions Club officer who is leading the project, did not respond to a call seeking comment Thursday afternoon.
