Special Teams Helps Clarkson Tie Series (Video)

Clarkson (21-16-4) scored two power-play goals and killed five penalties to defeat Cornell 4-1 in game two of a best-of-three ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

The Golden Knights forced a decisive game three at 7 p,m. Sunday against the Big Red (16-9-5), with the winner advancing to Lake Placid for a semifinal game Friday.

Clarkson struck first at 7 minutes of the first period with a power-play goal from Jeff DiNallo.

Cornell had a chance to tie the game on a shorthanded breakaway attempt by Jeff Kubiak with 2:12 left in the first period, but Golden Knights goalie Steve Perry robbed him with a glove save.

Clarkson extended the lead to 2-0 at 5:52 of the second period when sophomore Christian Powers scored the first goal of his career.

James de Haas made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at 7:33 of the second period.

Cornell cut the lead to 3-1 at 11:09 of the second period with a goal from Patrick McCarron, but Clarkson ended the scoring on an empty-net goal from Jarrett Burton with 7.4 seconds remaining.
