HAMILTON Darcy Murphy scored three goals and assisted on another as Colgate University defeated St. Lawrence University, 4-3 on Saturday to win both Game 2 and an ECAC Hockey playoff quarterfinal series at Starr Rink.
Goalie Charlie Finn stopped 23 of 25 shots faced to earn the win for the No. 17-ranked and second-seeded Raiders (19-12-5) who advance to the leagues championship weekend in Lake Placid, where theyll face third-seeded Quinnipiac in a semifinal on Friday.
Greg Carey scored two goals for the eighth-seeded Saints (15-19-4), including a tally with 3:14 remaining to pull St. Lawrence within 4-3.
Joe Wilson contributed a goal and two assists for Colgate, which avenged a first-round series loss to St. Lawrence last season.
Matt Weninger finished with 20 saves for the Saints, who were swept in a quarterfinal playoff series on the road for the second consecutive season.
Carey, a Hobey Baker Award candidate for the second straight campaign, finishes with 185 career points, which ties him for second all-time at St. Lawrence with Brian McFarlane and Mike Lappin. He ranks also fourth all-time at the school in goals (84) and is tied for seventh in assists (101) with former teammate Kyle Flanagan.
