Snirt Run is back on; club says it will comply with county’s demands

A day after calling it off, the Barnes Corners Sno-Pals snowmobile club has decided that Snirt Run 2014 is back on.

Brian J. Watson, a member of the club’s board of directors, said the group decided unanimously during a special meeting called Friday night to go ahead with the all-terrain-vehicle poker run April 12. The club will comply with all the conditions set forth in a resolution by Lewis County legislators last month that asked for adequate insurance, updated maps and improved signs and barricades, he said.

Legislator Lawrence L. Dolhof, R- Lyons Falls, said, “I’m happy that we’re back on track, and I’m glad that Snirt Run is going to happen.”

Jacqueline Mahoney, Lewis County recreational trails coordinator, also was pleased with the club’s decision.

“I’m glad they are stepping up and meeting all of the requirements if the resolution,” she said. “I’m glad they are thinking of the businesses.”

Gary R. Stinson, president of the snowmobile club, which organizes the popular one-day ATV run each year, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mr. Stinson said Thursday that the event was being called off as a result of the county’s demands.

The decision upset ATV enthusiasts and the innkeepers and pub owners who cater to them. The event has grown from 300 participants to more than 3,000.

As popular as it is, the Snirt Run also has seen problems involving damage to private property by riders who stray off course, which prompted county officials to demand that the event be more closely managed.
