An Adams resident was seriously injured and her daughter was killed when the two were hit by a pickup truck while crossing East Genesee Street, Syracuse, on Friday afternoon.

Syracuse police, in a news release, said Barbara Cook, 72, of Adams, and Jennifer S. Cook, 43, of Providence, R.I., were hit as they walked on the 900 block of the street about 1:15 p.m.

A Mazda pickup truck driven by James McDonald, 86, of Chittenango, swerved and hit them before coming to a rest in a snowbank.

The Cooks were rushed to Upstate Medical University, where Jennifer Cook later died of her injuries.

Though Barbara Cook’s condition initially was listed as critical, a nursing supervisor at the hospital said at 6:20 p.m. Saturday that her condition had improved, but was still serious.

As of late Friday, the cause of the crash was still under investigation, and no tickets had been issued. Police officials could not be reached late Saturday afternoon for an update on the investigation.

Jennifer Cook worked as an associate professor of English and secondary education at Rhode Island College, and directed the school’s Rhode Island Writing Project. She graduated with honors from South Jefferson Central School, Adams, in 1988, and studied at American University, Washington, D.C., and at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She earned her doctorate at the latter school in 2004.
