Paquette wins village council seat in Morristown

MORRISTOWN - Peter A. Paquette narrowly won Tuesday’s village election for a seat on the village council.

Mr. Paquette took home 57 votes beating out his opponent Janet Newtown by two votes.

The two candidates were campaigning to fill the seat held by Village Trustee John R. Barse who decided not to see re-election.

Mrs. Newtown congratulated Mr. Paquette after the votes were tallied.

Mr. Paquette said he was confident that whichever way the vote went the result would have been good for the village.

“Like I told [Mrs. Newtown] on the outset, anyone of us would have been good for this position,” he said.

Village Clerk Sandra A. Warren said the turnout was the “biggest I’ve seen in 16 years.”

The race was also the closest she’d ever seen, Mrs. Warren said.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said, “It was good to see so many people out.”

There were no write-in votes cast.

There were four other village elections taking place across the county Tuesday night, though none of them were contested.

In the village of Hammond Mayor Shelly M. Youngs took in 15 votes to continue serving in her position. Trustee Patti T. Belknap also won reelection with 15 votes. There were two write-in ballots in both elections.

In the village of Norwood Trustee Richard J. Boprey received 26 votes and Trustee Timothy A. Levison took in 32 votes. There were two write-in votes cast. In the village of Richville Trustee Anthony J. Wood received 11 votes and Trustee Larry G. Deets got 10 votes. There were no write-ins.

No one from the village clerk’s office in the village of Hermon could be reached for the results of their election. Trustees Richard J. Bardeschewski Jr. and Nathan A. Young were running without opposition.
