TELEPHONE SCAM - POTSDAM - Village police said they received a report of a potential telephone scam with an unknown party contacting a local resident suggesting their pre-paid MasterCard had been compromised.

The Potsdam Police Department provides the following advice for area residents dealing with situations such as this.

“ In this case, the prepaid card company will not have record of the persons in possession of the card and would not have any way of knowing who or how to contact the person in the event a card was compromised,” police said.

“It is also recommended that any situation involving credit cards a person should never provide any sensitive information, such as your card number, over the phone to an unknown caller.

“The department recommends that a person ends the call immediately, and in the event you have concerns about your card being compromised, you should contact the company directly with the number they provide on the back of the card. This helps ensure that you are actually speaking with the institution who issued the card,” they added.
