MASSENA - Members of the town council voted 4-0 Wednesday night to make a $10,000 contribution to the Massena Boys & Girls Club.
Deputy Supervisor Albert N. Nicola, who ran the meeting in the absence of Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray, said the town had been asked to provide a letter of support for a pending grant application for the club, as well as make a monetary contribution.
We have been asked to not only provide support, but also a monetary contribution that could be paid for with compact money, he said, referring to payments received by the town from monies the tribe pays the state for profits from its gaming machines at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino resort.
Mr. Nicola said he feels like the club is a worthwhile project, but he didnt want them to become dependent on funds from the town.
This is not an annual thing. Its a one time deal, he said, asking fellow board members about what they thought an appropriate amount would be.
I think $10,000 was the proposed dollar amount, Councilman John F. Macaulay said. I would move we approve $10,000 from compact monies contingent upon us receiving these monies.
