John M. Shean


MASSENA: John M. Shean, 74, of Massena passed away Monday, March 17, 2014.

Friends and family may be received on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. A Mass of Resurrection will be held 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Donald J. Manfred presiding. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery. Reception following Mass will be held at AM-VETS on Andrews St.

John was born on February 19, 1940 to the late Ruby (Premo) and Harold Shean at home in Massena, as there was no hospital at that time. John was 15 years old when his father died, and he then had to work all he could at the family Mobil Service Station in the Massena Springs while attending high school.

He graduated from Massena High School in 1959. In 1963 he married Anita Bump at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam. In 1966 with a partner Duane Pelkey, John moved and leased a Shell Gas Station on North Main Street. The business was very lucrative for about 18 years. John then found an avenue he enjoyed as a Ford salesman. He retired at age 65 with health issues. Diabetes Type 1 found him young in life at the age 34. Diabetes never gets better; it is a disease that just keeps on problem after another. Grandchildren Hannah inherited the disease at age 11 and Trevor at age the age 15. John and Anita both ask that anyone wishing to make a donation may do so to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA; 22312. John and Anita were a team couple for the National Marriage Encounter for five years. The program encouraged communication in family issues and the importance of faith in a couple’s relationship. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, and an Altar Boy while attended Sacred Heart Grade School and later served as usher. He was a Lifetime member of the Massena Elks B.P.O.E. #1702. They will hold services for John on Friday at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Yankees.Yankees. was his obsession! Syracuse Orangeman and NY Giants got a few hours of his time. He enjoyed camping, traveling and playing cards with friends and family. He is survived by his wife Anita of 51 years; two sons: Michael and Stacia of Annapolis, MD; and Patrick of Naples FL; a daughter Jill and Eric Wood of Ormond Beach, FL. two grandchildren Trevor and Hannah Shean of Naples, Fl; a nephew Murray and Maria Bollinger of Winchester, MA. He also was treated like family by his in-laws Jean and Edgar Kelly of Winthrop, NY; Eddie and Julie Bump, Sue and Ken Wiklacz, Nancy and Richard Randall all of Parishville, NY; Lynne and Church Saucier of Stone Mountain, GA. He was predeceased by a sister Sarah Bollinger and a brother James Shean. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. Online condolences may be shared at
