Four Lewis County residents arrested on welfare fraud-related charges

LOWVILLE—Lewis County sheriff’s deputies arrested four people on various charges stemming from alleged welfare fraud.

Arrested were Michael Preece, 35, and Amanda Walker, 34, both of Lowville, Phillip Boardman Jr., 43, Port Leyden, and Krista Wenstrom, 28, Glendale.

Mr. Preece and Mr. Boardman were each charged with one count of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a felony. Ms. Wenstrom was charged with 11 counts of the charge and Ms. Walker charges on three counts.

Aside from Mr. Preece, the other three additionally were charged with one count each of fourth-degree welfare fraud and fourth-degree grand larceny.

Ms. Wenstrom also was charged with second-degree forgery, a class D felony.

The exact amount of improper benefits the four allegedly received is not known. Welfare fraud and grand larceny are charged in the fourth degree when the value of the items is between $1,000 and $3,000. According to the sheriff’s department, the four receieved a total of $5,543.67 in benefits to which they were not entitled.

All were arraigned in Village Court and released on their own recognizance.
