Heuvelton proposes $993K budget

HEUVELTON - The public will be invited to discuss the village’s proposed $993,191 budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year during a public hearing at the village board’s April 9 meeting at 6 p.m. at town hall.

The budget is roughly $200,000 less than last year’s spending plan thanks in large part to the fact that the village isn’t planning any big equipment purchases, Mayor Barbara A. Lashua said. Last year the village purchased a new garbage truck and Mrs. Lashua said they don’t expect to have any similar purchases this year.

In the proposed budget Mrs. Lashua said sewer rates - $492 per year – will remain static along with the water rates - $260 per year – and trash pickup - $72 per year. Last year the sewer rate increased from $468 to $492.

However the spending plan does include an increase in the tax levy which will rise by 1.81 percent from $236,223 to $240,500 if the budget is approved in April.

“We have been blessed with a village crew and office staff that really knows how to manage the resources,” Mrs. Lashua said. “They are very frugal with taxpayer money and that in turn makes it very easy for the village board to be very fiscally prudent.”

Mrs. Lashua said she expects the budget will be passed – if there is no opposition from the public – at the April 9 meeting.

“I was very pleased with how well the budget went together,” she said.
