MASSENA - Construction is expected to begin soon on a new 10-bay hangar at the Massena International Airport.

The town council voted 4-0 this week to award the general construction contract to Con Tech Building Systems, Gouverneur; with the electrical contract going to Jordstat Construction, Alexandria Bay.

In both instances, Deputy Supervisor Albert N. Nicola, who ran the meeting in the absence of Supervisor Joseph D. Gray, said the low bidders were selected.

Bids were received from nine firms for general constructions with six firms submitting electrical work bids.

General construction bids ranged in price from $968,499 to $1,339,000, while electrical construction bids ranged from $139,653 to $157,900.

Highway Superintendent Frank Diagostino, who also serves as the airport manager, said the new hangar will include a large bay for Cape Air, as well as a large bay for use by the New York Power Authority, with eight smaller bays available for rent.

“We have people calling all the time looking for them,” Mr. Diagostino said.

The hangar will be paid for through a combination of town financing and an economic development grant received from the New York state Department of Transportation.

Mr. Gray said the grant will pay for $759,900 of the project, with the town taking out a loan to pay the remaining $469,442.

“We wouldn’t have done this without the grant,” Mr. Gray said, adding he feels like this project will help make the airport a more attractive place for area pilots.

The new hangar will give the airport 20 bays and join the existing 10-bay hangar there.
