Morristown Volunteer Fire Department plans to replace three aging vehicles

MORRISTOWN - The Morristown Volunteer Fire Department is replacing three aging vehicles over the next two years.

Fire Chief Kevin J. Crosby said the first goal is to sell the department’s 1999 Chevrolet Suburban and replace it with a three-quarter ton, crew-cab pickup truck.

Mr. Crosby said the new vehicle will “be able to carry man power and equipment” better than the Suburban they currently use.

The current vehicle has racked up roughly 165,000 miles, and Mr. Crosby said the department isn’t positive how much money they will get for it.

Primarily the Suburban is used to get people to major fires, ferry gear around and transport firefighters to training sessions, Mr. Crosby said.

Either way, Mr. Crosby said, the department will put the money from its sale toward its new vehicle, which is expected to cost $26,000.

The replacement pickup truck will likely be purchased this summer, Mrs. Crosby said.

In addition to replacing the Suburban, however, the department also plans to replace two aging fire trucks with one, $500,000 vehicle that is more versatile. Mr. Crosby said the department is “currently in the process of spec’ing out a new rescue pumper that will replace our 1988 engine and our 1993 heavy rescue. We’ll sell those two trucks and come back with the one.”

The total value of the two aging vehicles — which are the oldest of the department’s eight vehicles — is yet to be determined, but Mr. Crosby said they will likely have to finance a significant portion of the new truck.

Mr. Crosby said the department plans on buying the new fire truck, which will be capable of doing everything the other two did, within two years.
