The St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen’s Club endorses recreational activities for all seasons, for all ages.

During the winter months of the 2013-14, the club enjoyed a record amount of participants for its Introduction to Archery program at its clubhouse on Route 37 in Red Mills.

“Over the past few years, the program has become a really popular activity for youth,” said SLVSC Archery Instructor Greg Denny.

“Normally, we get 20-25 kids but this season, 58 came through the program.”

The program saw kids from five to 18 years of age participate.

“With so many participants this year, we ran two sessions. We had a lot of different kids participate this year. Some might not be the next superstar in basketball or hockey but they all find archery and outdoor sports fun. It gets the kids active.”

And active they were shooting at different animal-shaped targets on Wednesday evenings at the clubhouse.

The youngsters shoot at different targets from different ranges, all under the care or supervision by several members of the club including Shawn Denny who was one of the helpers along with Ellie Hitchman.

“Our club offers a wide range of activities. We have 130 plus members with several family memberships. We had two ponds, a pavilion, and several shooting ranges outside as well. We also work with a dog training organization. Recently, through many donations, our club did some interior work and hopefully next year we will put on an addition for the kitchen. This year the club purchased some bows for children who don’t have the equipment but want to learn the sport. It has been a great 12 weeks,” said Denny.”

A common remark repeated among parents and grandparents was “this sure beats them playing games on their computer. And this is a life-long activity.”
