SACKETS HARBOR Showcasing a menu with seafood, pasta and pizza, Harborside Pizza & Seafood will host its grand opening at 4 p.m. today in Madison Barracks at the location previously occupied by JVO Cafe & Bakery on Barracks Drive.
Jessica L. Flack, a restaurateur who owns Last Call Bar and Grill in Evans Mills, said she decided to open the eatery in the village because she feels there will be a niche for delivery food during the evenings. Ms. Flack also is the co-owner of Little Gs Pizza, which has locations in Evans Mills and Watertown.
Seafood at Harborside, which has a small dining area with four tables, will include shrimp, scallops, haddock and crab legs. Chicken Parmesan and pasta choices, along with homemade pizza with hand-tossed dough, also will be featured.
Ms. Flack said the eatery will generate much of its business from local deliveries. She and one delivery driver will operate the restaurant until Memorial Day weekend, when two more employees will be hired. She said she believes it will earn a reputation among village residents for its quality food and reasonable prices.
Im hoping to get everyone here and have the food good enough so the business will grow, Ms. Flack said. Sackets Harbor is very historical, and I think that I can capitalize on a lot of the tourism. Hopefully, well do a good enough job with the food to make it through the winter, as well.
Ms. Flack is taking over the spot formerly occupied by JVO Cafe & Bakery, which closed in October after owner Jill A. VanOcker failed to make it profitable. The cafe was open for breakfast and lunch four days a week and for dinner Saturdays and Sundays. Two development agencies are seeking to get back $25,000 in unpaid loans from Ms. VanOcker, who received that sink-or-swim funding in the fall of 2012 after opening the cafe that summer.
Ms. Flack said she believes the business plan for the cafe failed because it didnt capture the after-work dinner crowd in Sackets Harbor. I think the market is when everyone gets home from work, she said.
