PHILADELPHIA The mother of an Indian River Central School District student injured during a cheerleading practice has filed suit against the district.
Laura A. Petterson, Theresa, filed suit Tuesday at the Jefferson County clerks office on behalf of her daughter, Alyssa, naming the district and junior varsity cheerleading coach Marcia M. Pawling as defendants.
The lawsuit states that the youth was practicing with the junior varsity team on Jan. 11, 2013, in a high school gym auxiliary room. She attempted a stunt in which she was held up by four teammates, but she was dropped backwards, according to the suit. She landed on a wooden floor, suffering a concussion, the suit states.
Mrs. Petterson claims she had to cover her daughters medical expenses and other incidental costs. She maintains the district was negligent by failing to provide proper safety equipment, and in their management of the junior varsity cheerleading program.
The suit does not specify the amount being sought in damages. Mrs. Petterson is represented by Watertown attorney David B. Geurtsen.
