GOUVERNEUR A Canton man who was injured in a car crash Tuesday said the cause was the improvement in weather.
State police said that at 11:47 a.m. on Route 11, Larry H. Briggs, 56, was traveling south when his 2004 Buick Century ran off the road and struck a mailbox owned by Blevins Ford dealership, before the vehicle came to a rest in a snowbank.
Troopers said when they initially interviewed Mr. Briggs about the cause of the accident, he said he was enjoying the beautiful weather and was distracted by the sun and the nice day.
Upon further investigation, troopers said they found open containers of alcohol in his vehicle.
He was taken to Gouverneur Hospital for treatment of neck and back pain. He was cited with moving from a lane unsafely and having an open container of alcohol.
Further charges are pending the results of a blood test.
