Bigger signs approved for Ponderosa, Rue21 in Massena

MASSENA - Both the Ponderosa Steakhouse and Rue21 clothing store in Massena will soon be featuring larger signs, after both businesses received variances this week from the village’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

Restaurant General Manager Michelle Dillabough told village officials that the work will be completed by Reynolds Excavating, Inc., later this spring.

“We just want to take that sign and put it on the chimney facing (state) Route 37, three feet from the top of the chimney (going) down and we’re going to light it. I have Reynolds Excavating doing the work,” Ms. Dillabough said. “(We’re doing it) basically to give us more coverage. ... We’re just looking for more coverage and the sign is white and red. The sign doesn’t light right now. Something happened in the course of the winter and I just had someone look at it over the weekend and the ground broke a neutral wire underneath and they just have to dig it up. There’s probably only like six inches under.”

Ms. Dillabough added that she will be required to maintain the lighting on the sign.

Code enforcement secretary Avis Hazelton said that a representative from the business will be required to appear before the village’s Planning Board at their meeting today as well.

“You have to give them approval because the size of the sign is larger than what is allowed and on Wednesday they have to go before the village Planning Board for signage approval,” she said. “The code states that before they can get a permit. It has to have planning board approval. If the planning board approves it on Wednesday night (Ms. Dillabough) can come in at 8 o’clock on Thursday morning and pick up her permit.”

David Razzante, a contractor from Metropolitan Signs, Inc., in Baldwinsville, approached the board looking for a 12- inch increase for the Rue21 sign.

Rue21 opened in the Harte Haven Plaza just over one month ago, filling the vacancy created by the departure of Fashion Bug nearly 18 months ago.

“I’m here for a variance to obtain bigger sized letters to replace the existent ones there,” Mr. Razzante said. “I have the drawings here on the sizes and it’s basically 12 inches taller than the existent ones. ... Some of the letters for Rue21 are different sizes. The ‘21’ is 47 and a half (inches) and the ‘R-u-e’ would be 36 as opposed to 24 inches. That’s the overall height of them.”
