CANTON - The Canton Girls Lacrosse team carried out a defensive assignment to perfection on Tuesday to limit Jackie Sovies touches which have been so productive for Heuvelton.
The Bears held the Lisbon senior and Heuvelton scoring stalwart to just one goal, and offensively, the Bears stepped up to turn a 4-2 halftime deficit in a 10-7 victory improving to 3-0 on the season.
Defensively, we did a great job against Jackie (Sovie) who is a very good player. And in the second half, we stepped up as a team. Mimi Husinec really came through late. Im just really happy with the way our girls battled through the cold rain, said Canton coach Melanie Knight.
Husinec scored three goals and one assist matching Rachael Huntleys effort (3-1) to lead the Bears. Tess Knight, a Madrid-Waddington student-athlete scored two goals and handed out an assist. Lacey Kenny and Laura Wells each scored once, Claire Bartlett (2 assists) and Angelina Vecchio (1 assist) rounded out the scoring as Megan Howard made 14 saves. Olivia St. Pierre supplied five goals and Jackie Sovie and Ashlyn Foster each scored once for the Bulldogs (1-2). Sovie added an assist while Heather Thompson made seven saves.
I really liked the way we played in the first half but in the second half, Cantons depth took over. Right now, our conditioning isnt there and we were gassed at the end. But Canton is a little farther along as they have a few more games played and have had the chance to be outside.
