To The Editor:
Cystic fibrosisis a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It is estimated that more than 10 million Americans are unknowing, symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene which means they are at greater risk for having a child with the disease.
When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was established in 1955, children with CF were not expected to live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, thanks to wise investments by the Foundation in CF research and care, the median predicated age of survival for people with CF is now more than 37 years and over 45 percent of those with cystic fibrosis are adults.
Great Strides is the CF Foundations premier event that raises awareness and funds to treat and cure cystic fibrosis. Ogdensburg will host a Great Strides Walk on May 10. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m. The walk will start and end at the Dobisky Center and following the walking trail loop. Mileage for the total loop is just over 3 miles. However, walkers can walk at their own pace and return to the community center at any time.
Please join the walk with family and friends from surrounding communities in support of finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. You can also join an existing team or just walk independently.
New teams can be formed by registering at http:greatstrides.cff.org or contact the Central New York Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Chapter at 463-7965 for more information.
