WATERTOWN — The SkillsUSA club, which operates out of the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services, will use its annual community service project to raise awareness of animal cruelty.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry who work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

On Thursday, three SkillsUSA students gave two respirator sets for animals to the Town of Watertown Ambulance Squad. The respirator ventilates the animal while emergency service workers perform CPR.

“The respirators are one way the students are trying to help emergency services help save someone’s pet if they are caught in a fire,” said Patricia Cohen, criminal justice instructor for BOCES and SkillsUSA instructor.

Ms. Cohen said the donations were part of the student group’s annual project. They will compete with other school groups for the best community service project. The state competition will be April 22 in Liverpool.

Ms. Cohen said the students also will donate money to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Jefferson County this year. “It’s been a yearlong project,” she said. “They have been trying to educate the public about animal cruelty.”

The students raised more than $1,300 this year through various fundraisers and hope the money will be used to help the SPCA. They also donated dog beds to the SPCA.
