BDC supports Dick’s coming to Massena

MASSENA — Dick’s Sporting Goods apparently won’t open a store at St. Lawrence Centre, as first intended, due to conditions in the franchise’s lease agreement that mall management is not comfortable with Massena Business Development Corp. Executive Director Thomas Sullivan said.

“Dick’s has some very restrictive clauses in their lease agreement, which have likely eliminated the possibility of Dick’s locating there,” Mr. Sullivan said.

St. Lawrence Centre officials declined to comment on the status of Dick’s potentially opening there.

“Once it was determined the mall wasn’t probably going to happen, I think he (Michael Wachs, who owns the Harte Haven Shopping Center) stepped in to try and bring them here,” Mr. Sullivan said.

Whether that will happen at the corner of state routes 37 and 420, Mr. Sullivan said, is up to the town and village boards to decide.

“The ball is in their court,” he said. “They have to decide whether or not they want to sell or option the property.”

And while Mr. Wachs cited an email from Mr. Sullivan saying that an appraisal on the lot was going to take place, Mr. Sullivan said to the best of his knowledge no such appraisal has been ordered yet.

He said that step would have to be approved by the village and town boards.

Town Councilman Samuel D. Carbone Jr., the town’s liaison to the BDC, said he would like to see the store at the mall.

“I think we all would rather see them at the mall, just to help save them,” he said.

Mr. Sullivan said if Dick’s was to set up a store anywhere in Massena it would be beneficial to the community.

“We would love to see them here, somewhere,” he said.

BDC Board of Directors member Daniel S. Pease said that over the years since he’s purchased the plaza, Mr. Wachs has been very good to Massena.

“Michael Wachs has been very good to this community. He purchased that plaza and has not abandoned it,” Mr. Pease said. “He’s an aggressive developer, but he has been a good partner to Massena. You’ve got to give him credit. He knows his business and he does it well.”
