Colton Wesleyan Church celebrates Easter with play

COLTON — A foam sword fight broke out between angels and demons at the Colton Wesleyan Church, 4852 State Highway 56, Sunday during the church’s first Easter play.

White-robed angels fought off the demons whose eyes and faces, black with makeup, matched their clothes.

In the end, Satan, played by worship leader Amy G. Clemo, lost the war.

“We try to find unique ways to bring the Gospel message across,” Ms. Clemo, Colton, said.

Ms. Clemo directed the play and said members and children of the church have been working on scripts and costumes since February.

“The play we’re doing today kind of goes through the battle of good and evil, between demons and angels, and the climax is when Jesus comes back to life,” said Thomas J. Chappell, pastor of the church.

The Rev. Mr. Chappell said Easter is celebrated across Christian denominations because of their belief in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

“As Christians, we literally believe that Jesus came back to life and physically reappeared on resurrection Sunday,” the Rev. Mr. Chappell said.

“If Jesus didn’t do that, this would all be a waste of time,” said Dale P. Robar, a member of the church.

A group of children was able to lead the worship songs using tin buckets for drums and plastic, blow-up rock guitars.

After the 45-minute production, the children went outside for an egg hunt, which was followed by a free Easter meal for all who attended.

“We want to give the true meaning of Easter, but it’s about the kids, too, so we try to make it fun for them,” Ms. Clemo said.
